Motor Planning for Speech: Those diagnosed with apraxia and dysarthria are taught where to put their lips, teeth, and tongue and how to control their airstream for the productions of distinct sounds.
Language: Those diagnosed with aphasia can benefit from language therapy to improve word retrieval and comprehension. In some cases, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is also developed to enhance communication. Through pictures or speech-generating devices, a client may be able to meet wants and needs more effectively.
Cognition: Includes executive function, working memory, attention, and problem solving. Cognitive decline can occur due to Alzheimer's Disease, stroke, TBI, or brain lesions. Cognitive therapy aims to improve a client's independence, quality of life and safety.
Swallowing: Adults with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) may need diet consistency modifications, safe swallowing techniques, compensatory strategies, and exercises to improve swallow safety. In some cases, clients may wish to work toward advancing diet consistency.
Voice: Vibrating vocal folds together to produce clear, audible sounds. Some conditions, including Parkinson's Disease, can impair voicing. Voice therapy, including exercises and compensatory strategies, aims to improve a client's vocal quality and increase volume.
Fluency: Speaking and reading fluidly and easily. Adults with dysfluencies (stuttering events) may repeat syllables or words, have lengthy pauses, and/or display physical actions (i.e. foot tapping, averting eye contact, tense muscles) while trying to speak. Speech therapy teaches fluency-shaping strategies and provides environmental modifications to promote easy, fluent speech.
